It was the last 3 months of my one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) back then in 2008. I was serving in the northern parts of Nigeria, Bauchi State to be precise. Just like every corps member, I was worried about my future because of the high rate of unemployment and all. I needed some extra skills to put me ahead of the pack in the labour market.
One day, as I was reading one of the national dailies, I found an ad about a course that offered to teach how to install Base Transceiver Stations (BTS used by telecommunications firms to manage telephone calls),this skill was highly in demand then and anyone with this skill stands a better chance of being employed faster by the telecommunication companies.
So, I signed up for the 3 weeks course and had to pay the course fees of N70,000 (equivalent of $154 today as per the current exchange rate),this fees I paid as a serving corps member back then in 2008.I had to travel to another State to attend this course (not now we all could sit at home and access courses anywhere in the world) I completed the course and got empowered with new skills that would give me an edge in the labour market over my peers that had basic undergraduate knowledge.
However, I completed my NYSC and travelled to another northern state (Kaduna). I started applying for jobs. While I waited for job interviews, I figured I could replicate the BTS installations course that I had learnt in my NYSC, in my current location Kaduna.
I designed the marketing strategies made a whole lot of research, gathered new info and tweaked the course to suit my targeted audience (computer science graduates and Information and Communication Professionals desirous of landing a telecommunications job) and launched my first paid course.
I had 11 students that signed up for this course and I charged a fee of N40,000 (equivalent to $88.5 as per the current exchange rates) per student.
At the end of the course (3weeks duration), I made a whopping N440,000 (in 3 weeks!). I was excited and amazed that my initial investment on self for the BTS installations course I attended had paid me more than 5x my initial investment in less than 4 weeks!
So I rinsed and repeated this same course a month later and had over 20 students sign up charged the same fees this time in another location in the city of Kaduna.
I finally got a job in February 2009 and could not juggle working my full time job with travelling round the country to launch this course (I would have to teach the course on site, at chosen locations across the country, as there were no online course creations capabilities known to me back then).
So, I faced my full time job for 7 years,but, was constantly faced with unfulfilled needs due to financial constrains from having a single means of income.
I finally quit my full time job, and started my business in 2016 and lately finally figured out a way of teaching people what I know through a combination of certain softwares and hardwares without travelling or carrying out on site trainings and I can do this without disrupting my business! It took a lot of research, trials and error before I discovered the necessary tools needed to create amazing online courses from anywhere in the world.
